ULIA presents a research of the import-export dynamics of limestone, dolomite and mineral powder in Ukraine for І quarter 2020

Let’s remind that after noticeable growth in 2017-2018, with peak value in 2.7 million t of a stone (limestone dolomite), 2019 showed recession for 9%: in 12 months 2.5 million t are imported. At the same time recession happened on limestone (-16%) whereas on Dolomitic products took place significant growth (129%).

The beginning of 2020 caused a stir in continuation of the falling trend. For January-March 0.4 million tons lime – dolomitic products are imported that more than it is one half less from the level of 2019 (-57%).

Among lime – dolomitic products the main part is made by calcareous crushed stone of various fraction, however in 2019 there was an increase in deliveries of dolomitic products (mineral powder): in 12 months its share made 15% (377 thousand tons). In 2020 the trend proceeded – in January-March supply of dolomite grew almost twice, having reached 30% of all import lime – dolomitic products. Respectively, the share of calcareous products decreased up to 70%.

The long-term leader of supply of limestone is Russia which share in 2019 made 45%. In the first quarter 2020 the share of Russia decreased up to 42%, at the same time in about “quantity there was a recession of deliveries to 67%. Over other countries it should be noted Turkey, deliveries from which consistently grew since 2018, having reached in January-March, 2020 already 35% (however quantitatively recession on – 60%). Also in 2020 the share of deliveries from Moldova significantly increased (up to 22%), in exchange, there are no deliveries from the UAE and Slovakia which occupied a noticeable role in last years.

Among the industries consumption of an import stone the main part is traditionally made by the enterprises of metallurgy. In 2017-18. The share of metallurgy reached the maximum values in 97-98%, but 2019 was celebrated by increase in deliveries for producers of lime and the glass industry. The beginning of 2020 caused a stir in continuation of a trend: Producers of lime increased the share almost to a third of deliveries (29%).

Among importers since 2017 gained the lead MMK of Ilyich which in the next years was approved on the first position. However in the first quarter 2020 of MMK of Ilyich put 78% less last year’s level that caused recession of a share to 35% of import. Other leaders also reduced deliveries (Zaporizhstal by 72%, AMKR for 78%). But, the UKRSPETSIZVEST group significantly increased a share (29% of all import, the second place among importers). Together TOP-4 importers are occupied by 94% of all import.

Remain the most imported fractions such as 20-50 mm, 40-80 mm, 50-100 mm and close to them. Import of mineral powder, after long-term recession, in 2018-2019 showed growth. In 2019 111 thousand tons of a mineral powder are imported that there is more than the level of 2018 for 18%. The beginning of 2020 prolonged the growing trend: in three months 22 t a mineral powder are imported, sho last year’s level for 6% prevails.

Content of a full research of import and export dynamics of lime

For those interested, the ULIA offers a complete research, which includes the following documents:

  • report (.pdf format)
  • database (Excel format) – contains complete information on import-export activity for the period 2014-2019, by section of each delivery, with indication of the Ukrainian importer, foreign supplier, type and fraction of lime, packaging, customs and invoice value, terms of delivery and detailed description of the goods. The database, using Excel tools, provides enough opportunity to obtain detailed information on import-export activities according to the needs of the research customer.

The report contains the following sections:
