ULIA presents the study of import and export dynamics of limestone, dolomite and mineral powder in Ukraine for the first half of 2021.

LIMESTONE AND DOLOMITE PRODUCTS

We would like to remind that when imports reached its peak of 2.7 million tons of stone in 2018 (limestone and dolomite), the next two years there was a decline in imports of limestone. In 2020, 1.8 million tons were imported, which is 30% less than the previous year.

2021 is marked by a change in the trend – in the first half of the year 1.1 million tons of limestone/dolomite were delivered, which is 61% more than in the same period of 2020.

Among the limestone and dolomite products, the main part is lime-rock particles of different fraction. However, since 2019, a significant increase in the supply of dolomite products began, and in 2020 its total share was 34% (dolomite and dolomite powder). In 2021, the trend continued – in the first half of the year, deliveries of dolomite products comprised 40% of all imports of limestone and dolomite products, and supplies of limestone – 60%.

In general, this year in January-June there was an increase in supplies of all types of products: limestone (+ 50%), dolomite (+ 74%), mineral powder (+ 19%) and especially dolomite mineral powder (+ 113%).

LIMESTONE

Volume of limestone imports, million tons, 2013-2021 (06)

In 2020, there was a sharp decline in limestone supplies -46%. In the first half of 2021, the trend changed – 0.7 million tons were delivered, which is 50% more than last year.

Since 2016, Russia has become the leader in the supply of limestone, occupying 41% of imports; next years, the share increased, reaching 56% in 2020 (but quantitatively decreased by -33% compared to the previous year). In 2021, Russia continued to increase its share (68% of all deliveries), while the number of deliveries increased more than twice. The increase in deliveries also came from Turkey (31% of deliveries, increase by 35% in quantitative terms). As to other countries, deliveries are almost absent in the first half of 2021.

Among the industries which consume imported stone, the main part is traditionally made up of metallurgical enterprises. In 2017-2018, the share of metallurgy reached maximum values of 98%, after which it began to decline in favor of lime and glass producers. In the first half of 2021, the share of metallurgy decreased to 63%, while the share of lime producers increased to 27%.

The constant leader among consumers-importers since 2017 is METINVEST Group, whose share in 2020 was 51%. 2021 was marked by a decrease in the share of METINVEST Group to 42%, while the share of UKRSPETSIZIVEST Group (26%) and AMKR (18%) increased slightly. At the same time, all three leaders increased the supply of limestone in quantitative terms.

The most imported fractions of limestone remain such as 20-50 mm, 40-80 mm, 50-100 mm and similar.

MINERAL POWDER

Since 2018, import of mineral powder shows growth, which significantly accelerated in 2020 – 193 thousand tons were delivered, + 74% to the previous year. 2021 continued the growing trend: in six months, 125 thousand tons of mineral powder were imported, mostly dolomite, which exceeds last year’s level by 109%.

Since 2017, there has been a clear trend to increase the supply of mineral powder for road construction (almost all deliveries are dolomite powder produced by LLC “Dolomite”, Belarus). The chemical industry (Rivneazot) and manufacturers of building materials also have significant shares.

It is necessary to note the supply of dolomite powder from OJSC “Dolomite”, which has a tendency to grow and have an increasing impact on the consumer market: from 2016 to 2020, its supplies increased from 48 thousand tons to 163 thousand tons, and its share in total imports of dolomite powder increased from 66% in 2016 to 93% in the first half of 2021. In the first half of 2021, 113 thousand tons of dolomite mineral powder were delivered from OJSC “Dolomite”, which is 144% more than in the same period last year; so, the issue of market pressure becomes more acute.

Import of dolomite mineral powder, thousand tons

This critical situation was considered at the Summer Conference of the Lime Industry, as a result of which it was decided to meet domestic producers of mineral powder in order to initiate an anti-dumping investigation. The first meeting of producers of mineral powder, organized by the ULIA, will take place on July 28, 2021.

CONTENTS OF THE COMPLETE STUDY OF IMPORT AND EXPORT DYNAMICS OF LIMESTONE/DOLOMITE/MINERAL POWDER

For those interested, the ULIA offers a complete study, which includes the following documents:

  • Report (pdf format)
  • Database (Excel format) – contains complete information on import and export activities within the period 2015-2021 (6) in the context of each delivery, indicating the Ukrainian importer, foreign supplier, type and fractionation of stone, invoice value, delivery conditions. The database, using Excel tools, provides broad opportunities to obtain detailed information on import and export activities according to the needs of the customer of the study.
